Track credit card expenses in a personal ledger

Card feeds are convenient until categories rot. How to track credit card spend as an account type — expenses raise what you owe; payments are transfers.

expenie guide cover: track credit card expenses — credit card account in a solo ledger

In short

The short answer

To track credit card expenses without bank sync, create a credit card account in your tracker and log each card spend as an expense on that account. That increases amount owed. When you pay the card from checking, record a transfer — not a second expense. Month spent still uses expense categories for budgets.

Card is an account, not a category

“Credit card” as a category mixes dining and gadgets. Better: credit card as the Account; category is Dining or Gadgets. Bank-sync apps hide this under merchant names. Manual ledgers make it explicit.

The three moves

  1. Expense on the card account when you swipe (amount owed up).
  2. Transfer from Asset account to card when you pay the bill (owed down).
  3. Refunds as income on the card account when the issuer credits you.

Free tier catch

Many free apps allow one wallet (Spendee-class per Finny 2026). On expenie the trial and Pro support multiple accounts so you can keep cash, checking, and a credit card liability separate.

How expenie models cards

Credit card is an Account type. Expenses increase amount owed; income decreases it. Available credit is not tracked. No bank sync. Statement month still groups your lines. Free: 1 account total; Pro for more accounts, AI drafts, recurring.

I'd rather pay the card with a transfer I understand than import a feed I never reconcile.

FAQ

Is paying the card an expense?
No. The expense was the swipe. The payment is a transfer.
Do card expenses hit budgets?
Yes — by category and date, same as cash or debit.
Can Free track a card on expenie?
During the trial and on Pro you can use multiple accounts — card, checking, cash.
Interest charges?
Log as expense (category Interest) on the card account when charged.
Need the bank app too?
Your issuer app is still source of truth for due date. The ledger is your books across life.
