How to set a category budget without overbuilding

Pick the category that actually hurts

Dining, rides, or shopping — the one you open the bank SMS for. Goodbudget-style free tiers offer many envelopes; you don’t need twenty on day one. One limit teaches the loop.

Steps

1. Sum last month’s expenses in that category (or estimate if new).
2. Set this month’s limit slightly under the average if you want pressure — or equal if you only want visibility.
3. Log expenses with the correct category every time.
4. Check progress mid-month.
5. At month end, keep the history; set next month’s limit as its own row.

Mistakes to avoid

• Budgeting categories you never use.
• Limits with no expense logging habit.
• Treating transfer-to-savings as a category spend (know your app’s rules).
• Rewriting last month’s limit to “fix” history.
