How to set a category budget without overbuilding

Skip a 20-envelope rebuild. Set one category limit for this calendar month, log as usual, and read progress without shame math.

expenie guide cover: how to set a category budget — one limit for the month

In short

The short answer

To set a category budget, choose one spending category, pick the calendar month, and enter a limit in your workspace currency. Spent is the sum of expenses in that category with dates in that month. Start from last month’s real total, not a fantasy number. Overspend can stay visible — adjust next month instead of hiding the miss.

Pick the category that actually hurts

Dining, rides, or shopping — the one you open the bank SMS for. Goodbudget-style free tiers offer many envelopes; you don’t need twenty on day one. One limit teaches the loop.

Steps

  1. Sum last month’s expenses in that category (or estimate if new).
  2. Set this month’s limit slightly under the average if you want pressure — or equal if you only want visibility.
  3. Log expenses with the correct category every time.
  4. Check progress mid-month.
  5. At month end, keep the history; set next month’s limit as its own row.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Budgeting categories you never use.
  • Limits with no expense logging habit.
  • Treating transfer-to-savings as a category spend (know your app’s rules).
  • Rewriting last month’s limit to “fix” history.

How expenie implements it

Each budget row is category + month + limit. Budgets are unlimited during trial and on Pro. Home can show urgent progress. Copy from previous month when you roll forward. No bank. Unlimited transactions feed the spent total.

I'd rather one category I watch than a full plan I abandon by the 12th.

FAQ

How much should the limit be?
Start from last month’s real spend. Cut 10% only if the habit already exists.
Can I set multiple categories?
Unlimited category budgets during the trial and on Pro.
Does income get a budget?
Budgets on expenie are spending limits on expense categories.
What if I mis-categorize?
Edit the expense category. Spent recalculates for the month.
Rollover leftovers?
No automatic rollover — each month’s limit stands alone so history stays exact.
